Review
Summary |
Many consumers may not be aware that the majority of multivitamins on the market contain copper. For most people, this is not at all problematic. In fact, copper has been shown to be extremely beneficial for preventing certain cancers and cardiovascular disease. However, there are certain individuals, such as those with Wilson’s disease and those with chronic liver or renal failure, who should avoid this mineral. For this reason, Amni has developed a daily multivitamin that contains all of the standard vitamins and minerals, but omits copper. We will take a close look at this product’s formula in order to determine whether or not it truly lives up to its claims.

 | Ingredients in Focus |
|
As almost everyone knows, calcium is an extremely important mineral that is particularly vital to children and older adults. Growing up, we are constantly reminded to drink our milk, but there are actually quite a few alternative sources of calcium, including dark green vegetables like broccoli and spinach.
It may come as no surprise that more than 99% of total body calcium is stored in the bones and teeth as structural support. The remaining 1% is found throughout the body in blood, muscle, and the fluid between cells. Calcium is needed for muscle contraction, blood vessel contraction and expansion, as well as for the secretion of hormones and enzymes. There has been some concern in recent years that caffeine consumption may inhibit calcium absorption, but doctors have largely concluded that the effect is negligible in most people.

As previously discussed, copper-free vitamins are extremely important in individuals with specific, copper-sensitive illnesses. However, for the vast majority of the population, even small doses of this mineral can be quite helpful. While we were pleased with the wide array of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids in this formula, we were disappointed to find that it does not contain an absorption-enhancing ingredient such as 2-AEP. This means that those taking this vitamin may absorb less than 10% of its total vitamins and minerals. This is an unfortunate problem, but it can be easily avoided by looking for a supplement containing an absorption enhancer.

 | Final Thoughts |
|
On the whole, Added Protection III is a very standard supplement, other than its omission of copper. Although it may sound convenient to get one’s recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals from a single pill, the directions for this product indicate that three tablets must be taken twice daily. This is more than a little inconvenient, and many people may find themselves forgetting to take their second dose entirely. For this reason, we highly recommend that consumers look for a multivitamin pack that it is divided into individual serving packages. This allows the consumer to simply grab their packet for the day and go.
